okay i'll go 1st. saw nothing. listened to some beavers and ducks fighting over the pond rights. the other three guys i hunted with saw nothing in the am but one went out in the pm and shot a doe. made a rookie mistake though(1st time hunter) she was at 15 yards and he put his 30 yrd pin on her took a chunk off the top but just a flesh wound. got a tornado at my house and lost the pwer so i was not able to go out in the evening. gonna be colder than a witches whoha in the am will probably be in a tree.

another close call this mornin.....i got to my stand at 0 dark 30....real time about 5:10 am.....again there was a deer there...not 20 yards from my stand...it was dark and i couldn't see it...but i heard it bound away...sounded like a very small deer....about 1/2 hour after daylight..and just before the sun peaked over the horizon...i could see a doe walking directly towards me abot 45 yards away....it was a very nice doe...i'd estimate 125lbs...or real close....for some reason she turned and just walked away unalarmed....i actually couldn't believe how dark colored she was already....not an ounce of red on her coat....if all goes cool today..i'm gonna try again this afternoon....

Wells tells it like it is. I saw 10 deer from 5:30 to 6:50 pm. At one point, I saw 4 deer in 4 different spots, including a descent 8 point raking an alder. I had 6 deer at once, 50 yards to my right when I heard a snap and this one came from my left at 15 yards. Both Wells and I saw the deer go down, 80 yards away. I had 3 raccoons under my tree while I was watching the buck. A great afternoon in the Maine Woods.

Sept. 15th Openning morn. of the Maryland Bow Season.
I started out my first hour on stand seeing no deer at all but as the morn. progressed I saw 2 does and a fawn. about 20 min. after they went thru I saw my first Buck a rookie. Then about every 10 or 15 min. I would see another rookie. I saw a total of 7 rookie Bucks and then I saw something that I could hardly believe..........The wide what I thought was a 9 pt. was making his way toward my tree. I got ready and he made a hard left behind my tree. He stopped about 15 yards away but the tree I was in was kinda in my way so I drew leaned out and WACK!! He mule kicked and bolted down the hill and crashed and thrashed after only going 30 yards. Then suddenly he got on his feet and ran hard up thru the bottom another 40 yards and in veiw came to his final rest'n place. Dang Man whata Opener it was !!!! He sports a 22 1/2" inside spread and 23" main beam I scored him at 128" and he was missing a brow tine which makes him an 8pt. I have always wanted a good 9 pt. and when I saw him while on a scouting trip 2 weeks ago I thought he was but I will take him just the way he is http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif He is a Fine Carroll County Buck as you can see in this pic.http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_cool.gif

went out this morn. walked into my beaver pond stand and sat till 9. nothin. got down and looked around, nothin, not one track. walked up thru the oak and beech ridge and never saw one pile of crap, and only a few tracks. frustrated crossed the ridge and walked back down, same thing, nothin. got back to the truck about 1030 and jumped two small deer right at the truck. fot some reason the majority of the deer have moved out. pullin two stands tommorrow. frustrating, very frustrating.

Went out Fri AM in CT. Got onto the stand at 545. IT WAS POURING RAIN!!!!!!!! around 7:00 a doe came in. She fed around me for 20-30 minutes at less than 30 yds. I was going to shoot a few times but held off waiting for the perfect shot with the rain we were in. She came in to 22 yds and I drew and shot. I hit her a little low and a little back (liver or forward definitely not guts) I climbed down and looked at the arrow...there was hair on the BH and blood on the bottom of the shaft but no blood anywhere else. I made circles and squares and zig zags for 3+ hours to no avail...I felt like SHIT!!!! Still do. I went back to the truck and put on some dry clothes and went back out looking for her...never found any sign of her anywhere. Went to a new stand in the evening...still dejected...a doe and skipper came in and she picked me off but never busted...she had the stare down with me for 5minutes at 15 yds. She finally started feeding again but was still VERY nervous so I let her walk...one lost deer was bad enough didn't need her to make it even worse. It was raining again too.

Saturday morning I went back out around 200 yds from where I was on Friday night. I saw a deer at ~35 yds at first light but never got agood look at it...think it was a small buck by the way it was acting. I saw the same skipper twice (no doe with it) and at 9:00 I looked behind me and there was a buck standing 15 yds away with the same skipper looking at it. I sttod up, grabbed my bow and came to full draw. The buck was feeding around and I bleated real soft to stop him at 15 yds. I shot him and he didn't go far at all...straight down...high shoulder/spine.

It was a roller coaster weekend for sure. 127 lbs 8pt 91 3/8" = 218 3/8 P&P

Great job Shawn. Did I miss the photo?

I went out friday and shot a small one. Went back on Sat and was in stand for like 2 minutes. I was ranging some spots, I heard a branch snap, thought here comes another person, wait on my god its a big ole fat mammy!!!!. She circled me for 40 minutes and then came out to 12 yards and I missed. I suck, back at it tonight.

Good luck to all of you then can shoot.

Oh the one I missed was pretty good sized. I could have shot lamb chop that was with her, she stuck around when mammmy bolted. But I passed. I shot right over the back. I was shooting a new sight and seem to be fighting with it. So since we could not make peace, I got a new sight yesterday. Let her come strolling through tonight.

Any luck down there yet?

Hunted in CT on Saturday. Morning was uneventful...saw one coyote that I couldn't get a shot at and got SOAKED!!!! It didn't rain hard but all the vegetation was real wet when I walked in before light...i got drenched just walking to my stand. My buddy was in another spot and he shot a big doe and had 10 others around him that morning.
Afternoon found us in a different spot. At 6:30 I had 3 big does come into me...wind wasn't real good but we chanced it...they winded me and veered off. I had them broadside in the open at 45 yds but I wasn't taking that shot. THey walked off. Maybe next weekend!!!!

Quite a night in a Deer Stand

5:45 see 2 Fawns running around Playing with Moma for 45 Min

6:40 the Buck appears in front of Me 50 yrds away he first wanted to go to my Ground Blind then he turned around like he was going to come up to me..Then he turned and got in between the Blind and my Treestand and stayed there for 15 min waiting for the Clan to join him. I say Clan cause I lost count of Deer... I Watched them all til dark... I waited til dark to come down Didnt spook any Deer.. Great Night in a stand

After a 10 Min Walk out , there were 4 Does I could see at My Truck in the Woods right near it.. They all ran off and then I look to my left with the Flash light and there is a small doe 20 yrds away.. She stayed the for 5 min locked up and I was able to get another 10 feet or so closer to her before she ran off...

Til tomorrow Night.....

Screw willy, he is just to sissy to go back into the scarry woods.

Well last night I went to the tree of doom. Where I can go to see all the bikers and hikers I want. That being said, I have see deer 5 out of 8 sittings. Last night took the cake. I was very bust counting dogs and hikers.... the about 6:30 I heard that ole crunch crunch coming from behind me. I turned and saw some legs coming my way. It was two deer. I got up and ready. Then it happend....

Ole friggin mossy king of the forest picked his head up. Let me say this. I in no way mean this to brag, but I have killed my share of big bucks and this sucker beat anything I have ever seen. He came to 10 yards in perfest light. Sweat driiped from my browe. I thought, this shit never happens to me, he is my chance for a king. The doe circled around and stood at 15 yard in my shooting lane. I ignored her and focused on big daddy. If he went right, left or stright, I had him at 10 yards.

You guessed it, he walked off stright away and left the doe. What the heck. She stayed 10 minutes walking around taughting me in the shooting lanes. The last time I saw the buck he was 60 yard and walking down the trail away from me.

PS. yea I did shoot the consilation prize.

This was the most awsome encounter I have ever had with a bow in my hand. This is what is all about, my heart was pumping, I felt like I was 10 years old and just saw my first deer. What a great experance. I will chase him again real soon.

I did not get it last night. Nate is out looking this moring. there is a good blood trail, it just headed into a houseing devlopment. I did not want to scare the locals with a flashlight in thier yards at night. I am sure it is dead in there. I am going to meet up with him if he has no luck and go with him after school. The deer took off crashing, I went about 70 yards. I just eased my way out.

The trail was getting hard to follow in the ferns and I hit a spot where I was not sure which way the deer went. I am hoping Nate hits it with fresh eyes in the morning. My feeling is it cut back down the hill, but I did not see any blood to support that idea. The woods are fairly open. We can split up and do a walk about and should find it I hope. I felt good about the shot.

Sadly no. I went out with Deven and Nate and we follow the trail out about 150 yards. We had good blood. Looked like liver. We however lost track of it in a housing develpoment. We were doing things like trying to figue where the deer would end up on the other side and then having to circle around and pick up the trail where we guessed it would be. A few of those tricks and we were all turned around. We split up for one last perimeder search but turned up nothing. What sucks is I know the deer is probably dead I just can't find it.

I am hoping the rain holds off enough to get up in a tree and redeam myself.

My log is still just nailing spots. I am focused on finding the "Honey Hole" in suburbia mass. I just struck luck last Friday night when I was invited to hunt a 10 acre area that is loaded with deer. Went yesterday at lkunch to scope out. Yep, loaded! Trails look like mountain bike single track trails. This guy has deer in his yard daily. These pics are last fall, but he has about 7-10 deer coming in and out daily. No bucks that he has seen, but they're there. I found some sign of that yesterday, not much, but hints of at least one.

Had a good weekend. Saturday I got to go down to the cape where I saw the giant monday. It was some friggin cold. About 6:15, just as I could start to see, a small droup of deer came working thier way down the ole game trail. Two were big does and a few little sprouts. Since I alread have some veal, I drew on the big one in the group. The hit was a bit high but she only ran about 40 yards and I watched her fall. The deer dressed 117lb and had a 0 boone and crocket score. LOL http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_biggrin.gif

I should have photos by mid morning. I left my camera at Nates house and had to get a disposible, no promises on the quality.

Saturday in CT was real good. I got set up about 20 minutes before legal shooting light after fighting with the raccoons about who really owned the trail I was walking in on. About 7:00 a real nice 2.5 y.o. 7pt came walking in and crossed the creek. When I first saw him I said I was going to take him but had some time to look him over pretty good with the binos and decided to let him pass. His frame was a little bigger than the 8pt I shot a couple weeks ago but his left side was a little on the weak side. He walked by at 22 yds and fed his way up the hill. Now I am in NO WAY a trophy hunter but this is my last buck tag so I figured I'd let him grow another year (I think I made the right choice but I'm not sure now!) About 10 minutes later I looked over my left shoulder and a small 4 pt was making his way down the ridge. He fed around me for 5 minutes at 15 yds before moving off. That afternoon we hit a different spot and I saw another 4pt walk behind me at 18 yds he fed around for a few minutes but got my wind and walked off. I got 2 doe tags burning a hole in my pocket but no does to be had. It was and exciting day for sure.

Had a Fun Night in a Tree. At 6:30 this Deer was making his way to me. He was 85 Yrds out when I spotted the Deer . He made it to 10 Yrds from me and still no shot . (5Pt) He was to my right with his whole body Covered by a Hemlock Branch
. He was going in the Direction that would have put him by me , but he stopped at the Hemlock and Stayed there for 5 min. He then turned and started going down the Hill Slowly. I had a shot past the Hemlock out at 20yrds if he stepped into the opening. But he didnt . He stayed behind trees and went where he came from. I tried a couple grunt calls to try to get him back but I called in another one behind me. Just could make out it was a Deer but couldnt see Horns. By now it was getting to o late any way and No Pin..

Fun Night though!

Wells, he an only duck a guy like you so long.

I had a pretty good night. I went to an old apple orchard here in town where I have two stands up. I brought a friend with me. I saw back in the woods and he sat out in the field. I had two does come by at 15 steps and he saw three that went right under the stand. Since we did not want to burn our rifle tags, we both passed. But always fun to get close to the deer.

Well I had an uneventful sit in CT this morning. Got in the stand about 5:50, heard some movement off to my left at about 6:15 (still pitch black) but couldn't tell what it was.

Didn't see a damn thing til about 7:30 when a red-tailed hawk swooped right towards me and veered off about 5 yards from my face....scared the shit outta me.

Sat til about 9:30 and went to meet my brother to put up another treestand.

That was about it - was nice to get the treestand rust off me this week. The first couple sits are always the toughest. Gotta get back in the groove!

Finally bow season started for me on Monday. I was able to get out in the morning. It was cool with light rains and an east wind which makes it a perfect morning from the stand. At 7:30 had a spike and a doe mill around the stand for 20 minutes. At one point the spike was right under me and I had to look through the bottom platform to see him. He had six inch spikes with a little turns in them. He would of dressed around around 120. Due to only having one buck tag in my pocket, he lived to see another day. Won't get out till Sat. morning now.

Well, mabey that is my problem. I am breaking out my Archery plus t-shirt. I had a strange night. I sat my food plot last night. Deer came in as light was fadeing, but I could hear one behind me making a hell of a lot of noise. It moved around for 10 minutes and never came out. Broke branches and sounded like a moose back there. I am thinking it was a buck making a rub. I am going over at lunch and check it out. I want to see if there is anything back there.

Also alot more is going on around that Cam then it shows .Tonight proved that

2:50 Got in stand

3 :50 First Deer appears . It's a Buck he is out 40 yards when I spot him in front of me,He circled around me he came as close as 25 yrds behind me The n he headed off to my back left side. I grunted twice.

4:10 Second Deer comes in... another Buck. He was there for 15min and I had a Clean shot at 40 to my left. Didnt Take it .This Buck headed off in the same direction as the first. I was still seeing movement where they went. Well the First Buck Chase these 2 Does out of there and got down in front of me a ways . these Deer then met up with another Buck ..A nice rack on him !... It was all over for the Night at 5 :15

Watched these Deer for an hour and 25min.

I was able to get out on the 5th in the evening for an hour so I went to a groundblind behind my place and saw nothing.
Saturday I was able to hunt the morning. At 6:30 am going into my stand I saw a doe (I think) being lit up by the moon. I pretended I didn't see her and she just stood there and watched me go. At 9:05am I looked out into the old field and saw a deer running full tilt into a distant tree line. At 9:30 had a doe and button buck walk under me. And at 10:15 saw a doe, yearling and fawn pass about 100 yards away. Also seen a partridge, barred owl, pileated woodpecker, 158 crows and the usual squirells and small birds.

Sorry that I missed out on up-date'n yesturday but I did find her http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_biggrin.gif I hit her just a little further back then I thought but she only went about 150 yards. I started back at the spot where I shot her and found that I had hit a small sapling about 8' away from her which must have deflected my arrow somewhat http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_confused.gif But at any rate I found the same thing as the eve. before (no blood) so I just started a grid search and wouldn't you know it the very last little area I had to look I found her not 30 yards from where I parked the 4 wheeler http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_rolleyes.gif http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_lol.gif Dangit I walked the whole bottom and spent nearly 3 hours when all along she was in the area that my instinct told me to look first but I just wanted to go over every inch of the area just to make sure that I didn't miss anything. The good news is that I saw some Awesome Buck sign down in there I just hope that my stomp'n around didn't hurt anything. But then again without this Doe I wouldn't have the chance to Buck hunt with a Bow so sometimes you just gotta take the good with the bad and hope for the Best http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif Now I get to relax a bit before the end of the month http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_cool.gif

on way out spotted group of birds, got within 15-20 yds, drew and watched them rise up a bank... chick, chick, chick, etc. finally adult came out but jumped, no good shot. got the blood going, back tonight and tomorrow. all on the ground and all sighitings within 20 yds, fun stuff.

Checked out a spot at the end of the lake I live on Sunday, oak ridge that had some early scrapes and a rub line running down the back side into a small swamp. set up my climber 10 yds off the run for Monday morning. First time out this year due to my dads passing several weeks ago, felt good to be in the woods and watch the sunrise! Slow morning, had a red fox pass by a little after 6am and three nice toms feed by at
7.30. I heard them fly down at sunrise a couple hundred yards away. I may freshen those scrapes up a few times this week and see what happens, got next week off so I plan on giving it hell all next week.

After reading all of your posts and the and living through your hunts for moose and deer, I have finally been able to get out. Last weekend was the opening of Vt. bow season, however I was camping with the Boys Scouts, so I wasn't able to get out until last night. I had two does all around my tree stand. Probably about 80 lbs. I am going to Maryland with my son and dad next week for early ML season, so I passed on the does. I hoping between the three of us, we will come back with plenty of venison.
But it was fun watching these deer. They hit my trail where I came in, and were looking for me, but they never looked up. They finally snuck away. I won't get back out until Saturday night.

I was able to get out to the big woods and do some stillhunting with the bow. I wanted to check out a new area so I was pretty excited. When I awoke it was 14 C. I hate warm weather so I was a little down but I knew up in the higher country it is always cooler. Sure enough when I got there it was 8 C and didn't go above 11 C for the day so that was great. As for my deer sightings it was 9:20 and I was about 400 yards off the road. I had 2 kids pass 20 yards from and them big mama doe took a different trail and was coming right at me. She was 10 yards away when she jerked her head my way and then bolted. She blew and blew hard as she stormed up over that ridge. I imagine everything from miles around heard her. Other than that I had seen a couple of birds and a fresh bed on top of the peak. That deer was bedded in the perfect spot, right on top of a rock wall. The only approach was with the wind blowing right at it. Those whitetails sure are keen. Oh yea I did manage to come home with a big hornets nest.

I have been skipping right by this post.I have had a lot of fun so far.I put up two stands that have been giving me good sightings but few shot opportunities.I have one stand that I have put in this big cut and the deer have been coming in consistantly about 80-100 yds in so I decided to move a little closer.I found a good tree with some good cover so I placed my stand and got out to let things settle a bit.I went in about three hours later and couldn't get to my stand cause there were three deer standing within a chip shot of the stand.I tried not to spook them so I let them go about their business and they sauntered off. They knew I was there but they weren't too alarmed. So I get into my stand and get it all spiffied up and along about 5:15 I spot a doe moving in back of me about 100yds away, just feeding and taking her time.I lose sight of her but I can hear her. This goes on until just after 6:00 and its starting to get dark.I am trying to see her and can't.Some chipmunks are carrying on just at the base of my stand and I take one last look to see if I can see this doe,I can't.I lower my bow and as soon as it touched the ground I heard her bolt, she wasn't 5 ft from my tree.I couldn't see her from the winter beech that was directly under me.I still couldn't see her until I started to climb down,I looked in her direction an she wasn't 15 ft away watching me climb out of the tree. She didn't run, jump or blow.Just stood there and watched me.I just went about my business and she just walked off.Sure makes it alot of fun when things like that happen.I just wish her big brother would show up.Ron

went out for birds today. saw some huge ones in back a ways, so we park and walk around the skirt of the field. getting close, and then a big white van pulls in and they scoot right into the woods, not to be seen. we (little one on my back) go in for a few minutes to try and locate, but not making a sound, not responding to calls. so we decide to head back to the truck. have to walk right past the guy in the van. i get within a few yards, he's on his phone, doesn't say hi. we leave then drive back past the spot a few minutes later. wouldn't you know it... "no hunting" signs on the road. just my luck. prime birds and now i can't get to them. had them patterned and everything. they've cleared access for future buildings, but not even close to starting. trying to figure out why no hunting. have to find out who owns the land.

Friday, 20 October 2006.

It is overcast today and rainy. There is a cold front coming through.

I was in the Packmaster at 1400 and had found one set of tracks on the trail going in. About 1500, I did a little grunting with my caller and got a doe to respond. She stood in one place for about nine minute, twenty-one yards away with a small clump of trees between a double lung shot, and was very nervous, then she returned to the area she came from. The winds were up and down and IĎm not she got wind of me or not.

I saw this doe again about 1520 and it looked like she was headed my way. She was but from another direction and I didnít see her until she jump and ran off just after the wind did one of those gusting things. Again she was about twenty yards away. SO I learned something this afternoon about the area and how the deer in it can still move without me seeing them. Still, I did see a doe three times. Iíll be back there tomorrow.

Have just finished sighting in my bow. I decided after some consideration to purchase a new sight, it is a little late in the season for such a thing but my new sight although rather inexpensive is a step up from the one i got with the bow. Now i can stay out a fair bit further into the evening while hunting. So yeah, sighting in went well. Have a roughly 5 inch grouping at 30 yards, at 15 - 20 yards i am spot on. Good to go.

Tomorrow evening i hit the stand again. Will update with the nights events... or lack of.

In the thick stuff is alot of Water. The sun setting behind him I could see his reflection in the water. Pretty neat!

Well he got behind me as close as 10 yrds but didnt come out of the thick stuff http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_cry.gif

He stuck around for about 30 min then he had walked off.

After that I could see Deer Behind me in the Marsh 70 yrds away. I counted 7 Total til dark all Does.

Saturday, 21 October 2006.

The day is clear. Wind is from West to North, 10 to 20 MPH with gust to 35. Temperature to get into the high 50ís. Moon is in the Last Quarter +7.

I was in the Packmaster by 1415. I never saw any action through the time I was there. I exited the Packmaster at 1800, and after dropping my pack off on Moxie, walked up to the farm field to see what all the noise had been about I heard. The farmer had mowed the field. A lone doe saw me a ran off. She was the only activity I saw today. Iím going into exchange the memory card in the digital to see what has or has not been passing through, tomorrow and open up one area incase the deer are now using it to move through.

report for oct 22nd, 2006 3pm-6pm

So this is getting kinda ridiculous, again the same does came in while my buddy and I were sitting near each other. So far we have been busted here twice, my buddy has missed twice and last night it was my turn. I seemed to do everything right, took my time, saw the two does coming from a ways off drew while they were about 30 yards out behind a tree, they come right towards me and I bleat with the lead doe 13 yards out and broadside, I release and the two deer jump back and walk away slowly not even knowing what happened. My arrow is embedded in the ground with no blood, I missed shot high......I don't know how many more chances we will get!

October 21st

Walked in to my stand at 5:30 with the wind blowing about 30 mph. Sitting by 6:00 (swaying actually). By ten o'clock I'm freezing my butt off and still have not seen or even heard a thing. Around 11:00 had a chikodee fly past my head about 1 foot away and a red squirrel climb to within an inch of my foot before chittering away.

By noon I was on the ground still hunting and trying to warm up. Saw some coyote sign, almost got beheaded by a ruffed grouse that flushed right in front of me and still never saw a single deer.

I am set up in an area where I've personally jumped three deer while scouting over the last two weeks but each time I sit in the stand I see nothing. This was the second long sit (4th sit counting some short stints) - one entire morning and one 2-6:30 stint with no deer sightings at all.

I am dressed in Camo from head to toe including face and gloves. I wash my clothes and self in the hunter's specialty no scent detergent and place all of my gear in a scent free bag with a "fresh earth" dryer sheet. I spray myself down before heading to the stand and then again when in it. I tend to fidget a little now and then as my ancient cliber is very uncomfortable but I took that into account when placing the stand and made sure I climbed to a spot higher up with pine boughs on three sides of me.

What am I doing wrong?! http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_cry.gif

Nothing. In most parts of MA/NH seeing a couple deer a year is normal...especially until you get the lay of the land and how the deer use it figured out.
I consider each season successful if I get an opportunity to harvest a deer...whether I shoot or not is entirely different. Keep at it.

Went out Saturday AM. Went to a spot I used to be able to hunt in Harvard. I can still get in there for now. I haven't been in to scout the piece at all so I set up in a tree that we used to have stand in. TONS OF ACORNS EVERYWHERE!!!! All the deer have to do is put their head down to eat. I saw one small buck in my headlamp on the way in. THe deer was no more than 15 yds from me for 2+ minutes...broadside. Just trying to figure out which way he should go...it was kinda cool. Got set up and saw nothing...got down around 10:00 and took a walk/scout. Found where they are absolutely HAMMERIN some white oaks but I'm not sure when I'll get back out there.

Well Last night got back on the Ground where these Deer have been Passing...

5:45 Here they come 5 Does the Lead Bitch is about 50 yrds ahead of the rest....

The lead goes by me at 45-55-yrds and then then the 4 others get to me. One is staring right in my direction, The lead knows something is up. While this is going on I can see antlers coming my way.

I was hoping these does would keep going by me and drag this buck by me.

The lead blew once and stirred up the rest... At one point they were all by me but the Wind was going right at them and they didnt keep going.. If they did this Buck would have come right by me.

Well the Does didnt want to go any futher . And they went back to where they came from and dragged the buck with them..

Came close last night!!!!

Wind was variable in both direction and speed and it was cloudy. Legal shooting time ended at 6:21 last night. At 6:10 it was getting a little too dark for my liking...looking through a peep at pins was getting a little tricky. I was facing the tree and had started getting all my stuff together to climb down and I heard crunch crunch crunch...I turned around and there was a either a BIG doe or a small buck walking quartering towards me at 25 yds. I looked at my watch and it was 6:15. I grabbed my bow and started getting into position. The deer pegged me turning but stayed in the open. I came to full draw but just wasn't comfortable with the shot it was just not light enough to be CERTAIN of the shot. I let down and the deer walked off behind a hemlock. She walked away while I was gathering the rest of my stuff. I could hear another deer walking the entire time but never saw it. 5 minutes earlier and we'd have been grillin backstraps for supper!!!!!

About 10 minutes before I was going to get down I bleated and then followed with a set of grunts. 20 seconds later I here a deer running in the leaves directly to me. saw the deer at 40 yds and could tell it was a nice buck. He stopped on the ridge and it sounded like he was rubbing a tree or something. I knew I had to act fast so I grunted again...and the deer started working its way towards me. Rain this morning.... then rain with a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Rain heavy at times. Windy with high in the upper 50ís. Southeast winds 20 to 30 MPH. Gusts up to 50 MPH...increasing up to 60 MPH this afternoon. It the New Moon +6.

It was poring when the alarm went off at 0500. That meant, shut it off, roll over and go back to sleep. When The Bride got up at 0630, the weather was still the same. The rains is suppose to clear out late this afternoon but the winds are to remain through tomorrow.

Iíll use today to get some things ready for the trip to the Loge next month. I also need to purchase a few more things for the trip.

Sunday, 29 October 2006.

Partly cloudy this morning... then becoming mostly cloudy. Windy with highs in the lower 50ís. Southwest winds 20 to 30 MPH with gusts up to 55 MPH. The moon is at the First Quarter.

There was the return to Eastern Standard Time during the very early morning hours, which means less daylight to hunt in during the afternoon.

I exchanged the memory cards in the leaf River #2, Leaf River iR#1, and the infrared. I discovered this buck on the infrared and heís no small thing. There were a couple smaller buck, but this one is the biggest Iíve seen in the swamp since I started taking pictures.

The Leaf River iR#1 had a 1GB memory card in it and, apparently will not function with one that large in it.

Leaf River #2, had a lot of deer pictures with a few small bucks, but the family groups surprised me.

I moved Leaf River iR#1 to the first intersection in the swamps trail system. I replaced Deer-Cam #2 with Leaf River iR#2, on the trail around the water hole. I want to figure out whether or not the deer are going out that way in the afternoon or not staying in that area at all, and thatís why Iím not seeing them when Iím in the Packmaster in the afternoon.

I pulled all three Deer-Camís. Theyíve not been performing very well since spring Ė battery problems and just not taking pictures the Camtrakkers and digitals are getting. I gradually going to all digital for many advantages in operation and results.

Monday, 30 October 2006.

I got out of work at 1425 and headed for the house to change, grab my backpack and crossbow, then ride Moxie into the swamp. It was a great afternoon but no deer. I didnít climb down out of the Packmaster until 1710 with the moon over head.

Shawn how is the Wife Doing in the Archery dept?[/b]

She hasn't hunted yet this year. She bought her license, checked the bow, but hasn't been out. Right around the house has been pretty dismal for sign this year so she hasn't been real excited to get out there. This Saturday I'll head to CT...she'll keep all warm in bed...and then I leave for ME for 2 weeks the following week...odds are good she won't get out and hunt then either.

Well the rumor is true.. I scored! Awesome night, I mean awesome!

Here is the story:
Sorry for the bloody pics. I will send some better ones in a bit.

Well, most of you know already..I had a very good night last night. After the wind had died down I sat and waited for something to happen. I finally saw a doe feeding at about 60 yds or so. I watched her for about an hour when she finally decided to feed away. I hit the doe bleat several times and waited. The last bleat did her in, she came right to me. I stopped her with a mouth blat at 28 yds and drilled her. I then called my buddy Mike at Grip Werks and told him about it. He said I should get down and grab the arrow if I didn't see any deer in site. Well I lowered all my crap, and wouldn't you know this buck comes barrel assing over the hill right to my scent can hanging at 15 yds. I pulled my bow back up, making all kinds of noise, knocked an arrow, turned on my site light, picked a spot and let er' fly, BAMM!! Perfect hit. I watched him run and bull doze! I went and got my hunting partner and left. Went back at 10:00 and found both with in 80 yds of the hits. The slick tricks did a great job, my Switchback rocked, and I held solid on both! I am pumped!!!

Didn't get home till 1:00 am. All worth it!!!!

Definitely a mess but great hunt Posted_??. I love the part about lowering all your stuff then hoisting back up with that buck in range. Seems like he couldn't multi-task too well. Too focused on the scent bag to worry about the guy in the tree hoisting his bow, and moving around.

Gotta love it. http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_biggrin.gif

Saw dozens of squirrels, all three kinds, grey, reds and striped. http://www.huntingchat.net/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_smile.gif
Also saw two porypines traveling together, they took up residence in a pine about 60 yds from me.

Tuesday, 31 October 2006, The Brideís & My 39th Wedding Anniversary.

Partly cloudy, with highs in the upper 50ís. Southwest winds 10 to 15 MPH. Gust up to 30 MPH this afternoon. The moon is at the First Quarter +2.

I am not going to hunt this afternoon. The Bride and I are going out to the Steakloft for dinner instead and to avoid the Trick or Treatersí, Weíll leave as soon as she get here from work. If I hunt this afternoon, it will complicate those plans.

Friday, 3 November 2006.

I had an interesting experience on my way to work this morning a 0630. The house at the end of the street with its yard in Natick, had a doe in it. The doe ran across the yard, headed for the street and ran right into the wire fence. She got up and headed for the other corner of the fence, then finally worked its way up the fence and around it to get out.

I did get to hunt this afternoon but never saw anything

Saturday, 4 November 2006.

Partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 40ís. West wind around 5 MPHÖ increasing to 5 to 10 MPH late this morning and afternoon. Moon is in the First Quarter + 6.

I got up at 0440 to dress and eat. I was in the Packmaster by 0530. At 0633 I had a doe coming from the East on the trail towards me. She was nervous and some how spotted me. She turned around to leave giving me a quartering away shot and I took it. I had fat, red meat and white hair on the bolt.
I found a blood trail and followed it to Sunshine Dairy. With that, I cam back and changed my clothes and went to the Dairy and ask Jim Gagon for permission to enter the property to continue my search. After obtaining permission, I found the blood trail where it crossed the field and headed under the power lines. I lost it completely after that. I did find the carcass of a buck and reported it to Jim. He told me that on one had recovered any of the six deer that had been shot on the property as yet and that they were out looking for one this morning.

I also had my crossbow fire twice this morning with the safety on and I had not touched the trigger.

Oh BOY..tonight went to a different spot in canton, ma and after sitting for about an hour I heard crashing off to my left and immediately knew it was a deer. I look back and all I see is RACK. This was honestly the biggest rack I have ever seein in my life...heavy heavy beams. It was about 50 yards out and was on the move..definately rutting hard. I grunted but could not get the deer to stop. BUMMEr..but i will be in there monday afternoon to see what happens.

Saturday Nov. 4

"DAMN, BUSTED!!"

Beautiful morning to hunt. Got to my stand early and setup. At about 6:45 I heard some movement coming from behind me and I knew it had to be a deer. Around 7 I finally caught site of the deer it was a small buck about 40 yards away. I watched as he made a scrape and hooked some brush with his antlers. He was behind me to my right which is an impossible position to get a shot since I am right handed. I needed him him to keep coming on the trail he was about 15 more yards so I could have a shot. He worked his way closer now about 25 yards and made another scrape. Unfortunately, as he was licking the branch above the scrape he noticed me in the tree. He pegged me and did a few headbobs and then turned and went back the way he came. DAMN!

I sat till 9:30 but didnt see any more deer. When I left I went over and looked at the scrape he made before he spooked. Sure enough my tree was in his direct line of site when he made the scrape so its not surprising that he spotted me.

Oh well, it was cool to see him put down a scrape -- thats the first time I have ever seen it "live".
